Dracaena draco
'Dragon's Blood Tree'
An impressive architectural tree when mature, that adds a
focal point of form and structure to the garden. Also called
'Dragon's Blood Tree', the 'dragon's blood' is the plant's thick
red sap which was historically used for its supposed
magical and medicinal qualities. Native to the Canary Islands
where it is almost extinct in the wild.
| Uses: | Commonly cultivated as a houseplant in well lit positions and excellant in decorative pots on balconies and patios. outstanding when planted as a garden specimen. |
| Flowers: | In maturity, clusters of greenish-white, bell shaped flowers appear in early summer at the end of the branches, followed by orange berries. |
| Growth Habit: | Relatively slow growing, palm-like succulent which produces a thick truck, with smooth grey-green foliage in a rosette. |
| Growing Guide: | A hardy, water wise plant that requires minimal care. Prefers an open, sunny aspect with excellent drainage, and is moderately frost hardy. Will tolerate seaside exposure. Benefits from occasional applications of fertiliser. |
